A DOUBLE-LEG amputee who was allegedly tipped from his wheelchair outside a Greenock town centre pub has died.

The Telegraph told on Saturday how the 56-year-old was smoking a cigarette at the Horseshoe Bar when he was approached by two ‘stocky’ men.

Detectives today confirmed that a 31-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident outside the pub.

It is understood that the man has been charged with a ‘simple assault’ pending the outcome of a post mortem examination on his alleged victim.

A police source said: “There is potential for the charge to be increased but we don’t have the details at the moment.

“We expect that the post-mortem will establish the cause of death.

“At this stage there is no evidence to suggest a direct link with what has apparently happened outside the pub.

“The disabled man had underlying medical issues.

“But essentially a man has been identified who is said to have tippped him out of his wheelchair and he has been arrested and charged with a simple assault at this stage.” Police had been hunting two men who were seen jogging away from the scene in Kilblain Street following the alleged night-time assault.

Sergeant Allan O’Hare said last week: “The victim was in his wheelchair smoking a cigarette at the doorway of the pub when two men came out.

“One of the males intentionally pushed the wheelchair off a ledge there and the man fell out.

“They did not help him.

“They ran down onto West Stewart Street and entered a taxi.” It was believed that the disabled man — who has so far not been named by police — did not suffer serious injury in the alleged incident on 4 October.

Detective Sergeant Gordon Smith of Greenock CID, who is leading the investigation, today declined to comment on the case.

The assault suspect was released from police custody following his arrest and is now due to appear in court on an undertaking on 30 October.
