A BOUNCER had his jaw broken during a savage attack in a busy Greenock nightclub.

The 36-year-old had tried to remove a man from Word Up when there was a struggle on the dancefloor.

It was then another clubber weighed in and booted him in the face, smashing his jaw.

The victim was rushed to Inverclyde Royal Hospital shortly after the incident at around 9pm on Friday night.

Police are treating the incident as a serious assault and are appealing for witnesses.

Detective Sergeant Gordon Smith, of Greenock CID, said: “The bouncer tried to remove the male and there was a struggle on the dancefloor.

“Another man stepped in and kicked him in the face, breaking his jaw. He was taken to Inverclyde Royal for emergency treatment.” He has branded the attack as ‘cowardly’ and says officers are reviewing CCTV.

DS Smith said: “It’s cowardly – the guy was just trying to do his job to remove the other male from the premises.

“The culprit hasn’t been identified as yet but there would have been plenty of patrons who would have seen what would have happened.

“We would urge witnesses to come to see us before we come to see them.” Police are also hunting three teenagers who beat up a 19-year-old man in Regent Street in Greenock, only minutes after the nightclub attack. The victim was punched and kicked and suffered a cut, bruising and swelling to his face and head.

He was rushed by ambulance to hospital but refused treatment.

The incident is being treated as a serious assault.

DS Smith said: “The male had been walking with a couple of friends near to the BP Garage when the three males engaged him in conversation, then assaulted the 19-year-old, they punched and kicked him and he suffered a laceration to his head and bruising and swelling to the face and head.” Police have arrested one 17-year-old male but are still looking for two others around the same age.

If anyone has information on either incidents, they should contact Police Scotland on 101.
