GREENOCK’S latest new restaurant-bar will be called the Tail O’ The Bank in keeping with Inverclyde’s martime past.

Bosses have revealed the name of the family-friendly pub which is being built on the waterfront by the Hungry Horse chain.

It has also been confirmed that the premises, between East India Harbour and Victoria Harbour, will open in January.

The £2 million development is creating 40 full-time and part-time jobs.

Planning board chairman Councillor David Wilson said: “I think the name is most appropriate — it’s a nod to the past.

“We have The Waterwheel in Port Glasgow and Tail O’ The Bank in Greenock.

“These are very Clydeside names.” Mr Wilson also welcomed the employment opportunities the development will bring into the area.

Councillor Wilson said: “We have 50 jobs at the Waterwheel and 40 jobs at the Tail O’ The Bank — it is absolutely superb.

“Umemployment is coming down quite significantly in Inverclyde and with ventures like this will continue to do so.” The Tail of the Bank is the name given to the anchorage in the upper Firth of Clyde immediately north of Greenock and Gourock.

The area gets its name from the sandbar immediately to its east which marks the entrance to the estuary of the River Clyde.

It was traditionally a point of embarkation for many travellers, especially emigrants to Canada and the United States of America.

A spokesman for Hungry Horse said: “Work to build our brand new Hungry Horse in Greenock is now well under way and we hope to have our great value, family-friendly pub open by January.

“It will be called the Tail O’ The Bank and will serve a wide choice of food and drink with bright, modern and comfortable décor. The new pub is creating around 40 full and part-time new local jobs.”
