A 96-YEAR-OLD woman had to be rushed to hospital after she was involved in a collision with a bus in Greenock yesterday morning.

The elderly woman suffered injuries to a leg and was rushed to Inverclyde Royal by ambulance following the accident, which happened in West Stewart Street at around 9.45am.

It is understood she was standing on the kerb when she lost her footing, fell onto the road and her foot struck the rear wheel of the bus.

The injured senior citizen’s condition has been described as stable although she remains in hospital.

A local resident said: “The bus driver was extremely shaken by what had happened.” Passers-by immediately came to the stricken lady’s aid and the emergency services were alerted and quickly arrived on the scene.

The area was then cordoned off as investigations began A police spokesman said: “The police responded to reports that an elderly woman had been hit by a bus at 9.45am.

“A 96-year-old was taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital and remains in a stable condition. Investigations are continuing.” McGill’s Buses issued a statement wishing the elderly woman a full and speedy recovery.

A company spokeswoman added: “An elderly lady tripped and fell off the pavement and made contact with the rear side of one of our buses on West Stewart Street. We understand that she was not seriously injured. We wish her a full and speedy recovery.” After the accident part of the road was closed off, with police officers and bus officials remaining at the scene for almost two hours. The police have confirmed that there are no charges being brought as it stands.
