GREENOCK actor Martin Compston has helped to raise £110,000 for Celtic legend John Hartson’s cancer charity at a gala ball.

The Line of Duty star donated the jacket he wore in one of his best-known roles to raise funds for the John Hartson Foundation, set up following the Hoops hero’s 2009 life-threatening battle with testicular cancer.

The Inverclyde actor is already a proud supporter of Ardgowan Hospice, where his late uncle Joe Hendry was cared for as he fought cancer a few years ago.

Martin said: “When my uncle passed away a few years ago I could see the effect his illness had not only on him but on all the family.” Lifelong Celtic fan Martin has since agreed to be a patron of the foundation after meeting John for the first time when he played alongside him at the recent Maestros celebrity match at Parkhead.

The Wee Man star joined John and his wife Sarah, and a host of other big names for the first John Hartson Foundation ball at Glasgow’s Thistle Hotel and donated the jacket he wore to play Glasgow underworld boss Paul Ferris in the movie for live auction.
