SPIRITS were not dampened despite heavy rain as thousands turned out for the area’s annual fireworks display.

The Inverclyde Council arranged extravaganza took place at Battery Park on Saturday and was attended by more than 2,500 hardy souls who braved the cold and wet conditions to watch the skies above Greenock transformed into a sea of colour.

The dazzling display was set to a superheroes-themed soundtrack featuring everything from the music of Wonder Woman to Superman.

And it was a sight to behold on the ground as well, with many of the spectators keeping the Halloween spirit going by turning up dressed as their favourite superhero character.

The annual fireworks evening is one of the highlights on the Inverclyde Council calendar and it marked the beginning of the local authority’s busy winter events programme.

Provost Robert Moran has hailed the event a huge success and congratulated everyone who turned up to make it such a memorable occasion.

He said: “Our annual fireworks display is a great family event and this year’s was no different.

“The fireworks were spectacular and I very much enjoyed the evening, especially the superheroes theme tunes.” As well as the explosive display, little ones enjoyed funfair rides and everyone kept warm with hot drinks and snacks.

Following the success of the popular annual event, attention has already turned to planning the fireworks display in 2015 — with the hope that the conditions will be a little more kind next time round.

Provost Moran said: “I would like to thank everyone who came out to celebrate with us and I look forward to seeing you all there next year!” For more picture see today's Telegraph.
