A SHAMED Greenock woman got so drunk in a pub that she was incapable of looking after a two-year-old child — then attacked a woman who remarked on the state she was in.

Caroline McIntosh, 36, was boozing with pals in July when staff in the town’s James Watt bar moved in to ‘restrain’ her.

Greenock Sheriff Court heard how brazen McIntosh continued to ‘down’ wine on the premises after being asked to leave — then stormed back inside to carry out the assault after being put out of the premises.

Her drinking partner, Cari Welsh, 38, became angrily embroiled in the ugly scene and began shouting, swearing and banging on the windows of the pub.

Prosecutor David Simpson said: “The first accused was asked to leave by security staff due to her heavy level of intoxication.

“She downed the wine she had left and was again asked to leave.

“She was then observed pouring her friend’s wine into a bottle and started to down that as well.

“There was an altercation and one of the door staff tried to restrain the accused and escort her from the premises.

“Additional security staff became involved, and then the second accused became involved in proceedings and she was also asked to leave.

“While they were attending to the second accused, the first accused returned inside the premises and struck a witness on the head.

“Both accused were escorted outside.

“The second accused could be heard shouting, swearing and banging on the windows.

“Due to their level of intoxication they were not immediately cautioned and charged.” Defence lawyer Aidan Gallagher told the court that his client ‘normally does not drink’.

Mr Gallagher added: “The day in question, 5 July, is known locally as ‘Fair Saturday’ and she had gone out for the day with friends.

“She was invited to have a drink in the pub — one led to another, and another thereafter.

“By her own admission she got drunk.

“Not being used to alcohol, the drink had an effect on her more so than she would perhaps have realised.

“She has taken exception to the comments and advice of a couple at a nearby table and she struck out at a female in the heat of the moment.

“The child was not present at that point. He had been taken outside by another female who is not an accused person in this case.” The court heard that McIntosh has previous convictions for theft and assault and another for violent behaviour.

Mr Gallagher said: “It is to her deep regret that she got drunk and acted in the manner she did.

“It is a source of shame for her and she has not drank since.” Solicitor Gerry Keenan said of Welsh: “She stupidly allowed herself to be drawn into the trouble as it manifested itself.” Sheriff Craig Turnbull fined McIntosh, of Nelson Street, the sum of £300 and imposed a £120 financial penalty on her near-neighbour Welsh.
