THE man who was left fighting for his life after falling 30ft through a roof in Funworld is making a miraculous recovery.

Dad-of-two Robert Murdoch, 44, sustained horrific injuries in the accident and was later told by surgeons that he was lucky to be alive.

His family kept a constant vigil by his bedside as he spent weeks in intensive care — but they are now hopeful he could be home in time for Christmas.

Robert’s wife Sharon, who owns the indoor family adventure complex in Greenock, today told how she was one of the first people on the scene when the accident happened — but had no idea it was her husband lying underneath the rubble.

Sharon, who opened the family entertainment complex 10 years ago, said: “The surgeons told me that the two breaks in Robert’s fall, when he hit the ceiling and the tables, saved his life.

“I am the first aider on the site and I rushed to the scene when something happened.

“But I had no idea when we were moving the rubble that it was Robert.” Within minutes an ambulance had arrived and Robert was rushed to Inverclyde Royal.

He had suffered multiple fractures in his pelvis, back and skull.

His condition stabilised but Robert remained in intensive care for five weeks. He was later moved to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where doctors discovered his spleen had ruptured, forcing them to operate.

The family, from Wemyss Bay, say they have been ‘overwhelmed’ by the outpouring of support from Funworld staff and the wider community — with children even drawing pictures for Robert as a ‘get well soon’ greeting.

Sharon added: “We really wouldn’t have got through these last two months if it wasn’t for the support we have had from everyone at Funworld and the community.

“I really want to thank all those who have sent us their best wishes.

“We would not have got through it without them.

“We have even had children coming in to ask for Robert and they have drawn him pictures.” Robert fell from the roof of the building in Fort Matilda Industrial Estate on 25 August when he went up to offer a cup of tea to the contractors who were working on it at the time.

He is now in recovery back at IRH, with wife Sharon visiting every day along with the couple’s teenage daughters Rachel, 17, and Cara, 13.

Sharon, who has recently returned to work, added: “The girls have been absolutely amazing and I wouldn’t have got through this without them.

“I am so proud of them and the staff at Funworld have been amazing to them — we are all a big family.”
