HUNDREDS of underprivileged young people across Inverclyde are set for a brighter Christmas thanks to the return of a popular annual appeal.

The Salvation Army toy collection is back and organisers hope generous supporters can dig deep once again to make it a success in 2014.

Last year a total of 211 children from 111 families benefited, from newborns up to 10-year-olds.

The appeal, supported by the Tele, has been on the go for more than two decades and donations are already being received.

New toys only can be handed into the Greenock Telegraph office at 2 Crawfurd Street or the Salvation Army hall via the Roxburgh Street entrance.

The first of three registration days for families begin soon.

Organiser Maureen Pentland says the appeal really does make a huge difference to the lives of many struggling families.

She said: “The appeal is still as relevant now as it was when it started well over 20 years ago.

“Last year we had somebody that came back and donated toys because they received some from us the previous year and felt they were now in a position to help.

“They wanted to donate in return for the help they received.

“People are very appreciative and so kind in donating.

“If anyone can donate then they can hand their items in to the Telegraph office or to the Salvation Army in Roxburgh Street.” The appeal is backed by local churches and various other organisations as well as the general public.

Three days of registration for applicants take place, on Monday 24, Wednesday 26 and Friday 28 November from 10am to noon.

People must bring children’s birth certificates or proof of identification along with proof of low income.
