A MAN was stabbed in the stomach and left for dead last night during a brutal street attack carried out by two men.

Detectives have launched an attempted murder inquiry after the 32-year-old was set upon in Greenock’s Mavis Road around 7.45pm.

He managed to make his way to a friend’s house in Wren Road to raise the alarm and was then rushed to Inverclyde Royal by ambulance.

The victim, who also suffered head injuries, had to have emergency surgery on his stab wounds and he remains in a stable condition in hospital.

Detective Inspector David Wagstaff of Greenock CID is leading the inquiry and has appealed for the local community’s help to catch those responsible for the murder bid.

DI Wagstaff said: “We will be carrying out door-to-door enquiries in the Wren Road area today.

“We will also be trawling through CCTV images to see if anything was captured on camera.

“I would appeal for anyone who saw or heard anything to come forward with information.” Anyone who can help should contact Greenock CID on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
