A MEMBER of Greenock’s Air Cadets is flying high after landing an apprenticeship which will see him work on a £125m military jet.

Scott McGougan of Greenock says he got the coveted job because of his experience with the local youth organisation.

Scott, who is a corporal with the cadets, will work on an aircraft maintenance and support apprenticeship with BAE Systems in England — and can’t wait to get started.

He said: “It involves working on the Eurofighter and other types of aircraft, possibly including the Vulcan, the last remaining delta wing V-class bomber.” Scott took part in a final cadets parade night before leaving and was keen to thank everyone involved in the organisation.

He told the Tele he owed his new job to being a member of the cadets and explained how it had equipped him for the tough BAE vetting process.

Scott said: “Part of the application process involved a presentation, so the skills I learned on the cadets’ ‘method of instructor’ course proved invaluable, along with my other training from the cadets.” The Commanding Officer of 49F Greenock Squadron ATC, Flight Lieutenant Vanda Nicholls, praised Scott’s dedication.

She said: “Corporal McGougan shows just what young people can achieve as a member of the Air Cadet organisation.

“I would encourage any young person between the ages of 13 and 19 to join the Air Training Corps and take full advantage of what we have to offer.

“We are always on the look-out for new recruits, and, if any young person is interested, they can visit or phone the squadron any Monday or Thursday evening on 723358.” The squadron parades every Monday and Thursday from 7pm to 9.30pm at its premises at 26 Ardgowan Street.
