A GREENOCK man charged with assaulting his partner has married her — with the blessing of a sheriff.

Lawman Ian Fleming axed bail conditions preventing Kevin Campbell from going near his partner in order to allow the couple to get hitched.

They exchanged vows at Greenock Registry Office, right, on West Stewart Street during a brief lunchtime ceremony on Tuesday in front of family and friends.

But Campbell, 35, declined to talk about the nuptials when approached by our reporter, saying simply: “Naw.” During a court appearance ahead of the wedding, defence lawyer Aidan Gallagher submitted an official letter confirming the date and time of the ceremony.

Campbell — who is on a high dosage methadone programme — denies two domestic abuse charges.

Prosecutor Pamela Brady said: “There is a difficult balance to be struck. The court can clearly see the nature of the charges.

“And the accused’s record is not insignificant.” Sheriff Fleming replied: “Yes, but I understand that the court has imposed a bail condition which the complainer doesn’t want.” The Telegraph told previously how Campbell has repeatedly flouted the order not to approach or contact his new wife.

Police twice found Campbell at his then-fiancee’s Newton Street flat — hiding under a mattress on one occasion.

Sheriff Derek Hamilton remanded him in custody on the matter in September.

The sheriff told Campbell at the time: “Bail with special conditions are there for a reason and it is for the court to decide on them — not other people.” Sentencing him for the breaches last month, Sheriff Fleming, pictured, placed Campbell under supervision in the community for 12 months and ordered him to carry out 70 hours of unpaid work.

Solicitor Gerry Keenan said at the hearing: “There is a clear desire on the part of the complainer that the relationship resumes as quickly as possible.” During the bail relaxation hearing last week, fiscal depute Mrs Brady said: “The Crown doesn’t wish to be standing in the way of a marriage, but it is somewhat difficult given the nature of the charges.” Sheriff Fleming told Campbell, of Holmscroft Street: “The application is granted.

“Make sure you behave yourself.”
