Alexander Campbell, pictured, lost his life in an accident last year on the A8 at Port Glasgow.

His mum and dad Shaun and Helen, of Glen Douglas Way, have already raised around £3,000 to help the Golden Jubilee Hospital, where medics fought to save their son’s life, and the brain injury charity Headway.

Now the couple are organising a race night in Alexander’s memory on 13 February, as he would have turned 20 on Valentine’s Day.

His aunt Joanne McGowan, 42, of Prospecthill View, said: “It’s a celebration of his birthday as we would if he was here, and it will raise funds for the hospital and Headway. All the funds will be split between the two.” The mum-of-four is Helen’s sister and has been offering her support with the rest of the family over the last few months.

She said: “Christmas was a sad time but we’re all pulling together as a family.

“This was something Shaun and Helen wanted to do, it was in the pipeline but they thought with Alexander’s birthday coming up it was a good time to do it.

“Everyone has been pitching-in to make sure we get it right for Helen and Shaun.

“All of Alexander’s friends are expected to come as well.

“We want to make as much as we possibly can on the night.” Alexander was initially rushed to Inverclyde Royal after suffering a cardiac arrest at the scene of the crash near to Coronation Park on 12 April.

He ‘died’ for 45 minutes before being brought back by medics and was transferred to the Golden Jubilee Hospital in Clydebank.

But doctors then told his family he had suffered irreparable brain damage due to a lack oxygen.

The popular teenager passed away on 20 April.

The event in his memory will be held at Rankin Park Bowling Club and the family are looking for donations for a fundraising raffle.
