Stefano Varese hopes councillors will allow his family to keep the bright colour of their Esplanade home when they meet for a crunch a local review hearing on 4 February.

The meeting comes after Inverclyde Council officials refused the Varese family permission to keep the colour scheme of their property, stating that the colours form ‘an intrusive feature within the streetscape’ and are not in keeping with the west end conservation area.

The decision came after complaints were made about the colour of the property after it was repainted.

But Stefano, along with his dad Adriano, mum Edilia and brother Edoardo, pictured, appealed the decision and they now hope it will be overturned.

He said: “I’m still baffled as to how a few people could cause such a fuss when we have over 2,000 people supporting the colour of our house on social media.

“We have lived at the property for three decades and have painted it in various colours without any complaints.

“It’s ridiculous, as there is nothing in writing that says that yellow can’t be used and we know of other properties painted brightly in conservation areas throughout Inverclyde.” Last year the Telegraph reported how council officials ordered the family to repaint their property — which faces the Esplanade at the corner of Madeira Street — after five objections were received compated to 31 letters of support.

This led to an online petition on Facebook entitled ‘save the yellow house’ – which has attracted over 1,200 members.

Councillor David Wilson, who is chair of the local review body, will be joined by four other councillors to review the case.

He said: “It’s a very interesting case.

“I have been several times to look at the house from both the Eldon Street side and from the Esplanade.

“I’ll meet with the other members to discuss the issue at the meeting on 4 February.”
