Peter McDermott is accused of attacking Bernard McDermott at a flat in Lynedoch Street in April last year.
McDermott is said to have repeatedly knifed the OAP on the head, neck and body.
The 41-year-old also faces a charge of attempting to defeat the ends of justice, including an allegation that he hid a bloodstained knife and washed blood from his hands.
McDermott is further accused of having a knife in a public place and faces a separate charge of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner.
Judge Lady Rae set his trial for June at the High Court in Stirling.
