The victim, who is 23 weeks pregnant, was walking alongside Greenock Cemetery, near Murray Street at 8pm on Sunday night when she was confronted by three men.
Detectives say the men, who all appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, made ‘sexualised’ comments to the 21-year-old before pushing her against a wall.
She managed to escape after shouting at them, and ran off in the direction of Inverkip Street before making her way home to Port Glasgow.
The woman then attended Inverclyde Royal Hospital for a precautionary check-up.
She was later released uninjured but has been left badly shaken by her frightening ordeal.
David Wagstaff of Greenock CID has described the incident as ‘appalling’.
Detective Inspector Wagstaff said: “It’s an appalling attack on a pregnant female who was minding her own business making her way home from a friend’s house.” The men are described as aged between 27 and 29.
One was wearing a black rain jacket with his hood up and a hat underneath and he had jogging bottoms on.
The two other attackers were also wearing rain jackets with their hoods up, with one of the pair wearing jeans.
Anyone who has any information about the assault is asked to phone the police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
