A FORMER WWE champ is heading to Greenock to fight at one of the biggest wrestling events ever staged in Inverclyde.

Ex-intercontinental and tag team champion Drew Galloway is going back to his roots by competing for Premier British Wrestling (PBW) at their latest blockbuster in Greenock Town Hall in May.

The Ayrshire-born grappler shot to fame after signing a contract with the world’s biggest and best-known wrestling brand, WWE, at the age of just 22 and he spent seven years Stateside plying his trade with the best.

During that time he won the coveted intercontinental belt in 2009, pictured, and went on to capture a big tag team crown along with partner Cody Rhodes a year later.

Dubbed ‘The Sinister Scotsman’, Drew was also tipped as a future world champion by WWE supremo Vince McMahon.

Despite his obvious talent, he was sensationally axed by bosses last year to the surprise of many.

But the determined Ayr man fights on and is now continuing his career on the independent circuit.

Local wrestling fans will get a chance to see him in action up close in three months at PBW’s ‘Breaking Limits’ event on Saturday 2 May.

PBW boss Ross Watson is promising an extra-special night.

He told the Tele: “It’s a really big coup for us.

“We’re delighted to have him on the card and it will be a fantastic night.” More big-names are due to be added to the line-up and the event will also give local competitors the chance to fight on the same bill as former WWE superstar Drew.

Ross said: “There will be other big-name announcements in the future and there will be a chance for wrestlers from the local wrestling school to be part of the show.

“The training school is in Greenock Sports Centre every Sunday morning from 10am to 1pm and run by Scott Maverick.

“It opened in November 2013 and is really growing.

“Every week there are 23 or 24 people — it started out with 13.

“We’re hoping in 2015 to have another three or four guys break onto shows.” Tickets for Breaking Limits at Greenock Town Hall are on sale now, priced from £12.50 for adults and £11 for children.

They can be bought from the box office by calling 723723.
