The track — complete with its very own video — went live on YouTube on Wednesday and even mentions the Tele, below.

It pokes fun at the furore over the planning row about the colour of the west end property, which has sparked a huge debate throughout Inverclyde and further afield.

The song chides council officials and councillors are gently mocked for their role in rejecting the lemon-painted Esplanade building, which now has to be repainted a more suitable colour following a review board decision last week.

The one and a half minute ditty — titled ‘The Yellow House of Greenock’ — quickly gained over 100 views but is rapidly growing in popularity on social media.

The subtitled song opens with the lyrics: ‘They let the painters loose on a big old hoose and spruced it up to yelly, and the owners hit the roof when it made the local news on the pages of the Greenock Tele.’ The song sticks the boot into ‘busybodies’ who made a complaint about the colour, before the chorus criticises local authority officials for demanding that the house owners seek planning permission before subsequently rejecting it.

It says: ‘You can’t just decorate your home, in the conservation zone until we say it’s okay.’ The music man who came up with the witty creation says he wants to remain anonymous but says the story was perfect material for a song.

He told the Tele: “I thought a rammy about the colour of a house was pretty much songwriting gold.

“It’s just a way to poke fun at the council for what seems a pretty unfair decision.

“I guess rules are rules, but the house is clearly well maintained and I think it looks great.

“I recorded the song in my bedroom and just read Telegraph online stories and Facebook comments to help with the lyrics.” Council officials deemed the colour of the property unsuitable for the area, which is in a conservation zone.

The Varese family, who own the house, spent £3,000 decorating it and are contesting the decision. They say the colour reflects their Mediterranean heritage and brightens up the area.
