Tiana Flannery was born with the life-threatening infant condition biliary atresia, where inflammation develops within the bile ducts around the time of birth — leading to damage and scarring of the organ.

At the age of just 12 weeks she was rushed to King’s College Hospital in London for an emergency liver transplant.

The procedure made history as the Larkfield tot became the youngest child in Scotland to receive such a transplant at the time.

Now aged 15, Tiana is desperate to raise awareness of liver disease — and collect money for the Children’s Liver Disease Foundation (CLDF) with the help of her grandad Denis and gran Shirley.

Tiana, a pupil at Inverclyde Academy, said: “I feel lucky.

“Everything I’ve been through is quite something.

“I’m just thankful to the person who donated the liver.

“Now I want to give something back to help other people.” Tiana may have been much too young to recall what happened to her but the experience is still firmly etched in the mind of her mum Kelly-Ann.

Kelly-Ann, 32, said: “Tiana has kept all the newspaper clippings and looks back at them.

“She doesn’t quite realise what happened because she was so young.

“But I remember — I was in a daze.

“I didn’t know what was going on — I just remember being traumatised.” Tiana has organised a fundraising quiz night and disco at the LMA Club in Auchmead Road on Friday 6 March to support CLDF and other youngsters who are affected by life-threatening liver disease.

Grandad Denis, 71, said: “We’ll do anything we can to help these people.

“They saved her life.

“It’s a small charity and not a lot of people know about it.

“Tiana has done very well and I’m so proud of her.” The family have received huge support for their charity effort already from friends, family, local businesses and firms outwith the area.

They have been given a whole host of raffle prizes, including meal vouchers, bottles and donations from Morton, Rangers and Celtic, while the LMA Club are allowing them free use of their hall.

Kelly-Ann said: “Everybody is doing their bit — it’s unbelievable.

“Tiana’s dedicated to everything she does.

“She’s fantastic.” Tickets for the benefit night, priced just £5, will be available on the door or they can be purchased in advance from the family or the LMA Club.
