A HEAVILY pregnant woman and a taxi driver had to be taken to hospital following a crash in Greenock yesterday.

Police had to close a stretch of Roxburgh Street, near to its junction with Sir Michael Street, after the car and cab collided at around 9.25am yesterday.

One of the vehicles hit an electricity junction box, resulting in a power cut to flats in Sir Michael Street.

The driver of the car, a 28-year-old pregnant woman, was taken to Inverclyde Royal and got the all clear from doctors.

The taxi driver, 55, was also taken to the hospital but found to be uninjured.

His passenger was not hurt in the collision.

Two fire engines, two ambulances and several police vehicles were in attendance at the scene.

Scottish Power were also called out to make the electricity box safe.

The road was closed between Trafalgar Street and Bearhope Street for over two hours — and the top half of Sir Michael Street was also shut off.

A number of smashes have occurred on the stretch in recent times, including an incident last month when a van careered into the side of a block of flats.

Local grandmother Sally McShand, who lives near to the latest accident scene, contacted the Tele to express concern about the number of accidents.

Mrs McShand said: “Something has got to be done.

“I see cars racing up and down but do you have to wait until somebody is killed before anything is done?”
