People are being asked to go the extra mile and take part in Ardgowan Hospice’s Sunset Walk in May.

The popular fundraiser has raised a staggering £278,335 over the last five years, and organisers are hoping to build on this success.

Elaine McNeill, the hospice’s community development manager, said: “It’s a massive amount and we’re really proud of everyone who’s taken part in the walk.

“In the last five years 1,573 people have completed it.” The 10k route takes people from Battery Park to the Royal Bank of Scotland Mortgage Centre and back.

There are also 5k and 1k routes open to walkers.

Anne Mills, chief executive of the hospice, said: “The Sunset Walk is just a brilliant night out and a perfect time of year to ‘blow off the stoor’ from your trainers and pop them on to help your own local hospice.

“Ardgowan is completely dependent on the generosity and kindness of the people and organisations of Inverclyde. Your support and dedication means we can continue to care for local people. Your entry fee and sponsorship efforts ensure our team of Ardgowan home care nurses have the necessary funding to go out into people’s own homes to deliver brilliant hospice care.” As well as helping a good cause, the walk is also great fun and in previous years particpants have been supported by May Hughes Cheerleaders, Scouts and the Boys’ Brigade.

St Andrew’s Ambulance Association also attend to deal with any medical issues.

Elaine said: “We hand out questionnaires every year and the feedback we get is fantastic. Everyone has a great time. It’s always enjoyable and there’s a great sense of achievement among everyone at the end.” Hospice bosses also stress that money raised will help local people. Anne said: “Unlike the many national charities who fundraise in Inverclyde, the money raised from our Sunset Walk stays in our local area, supporting local folk and delivering care from your local hospice.

“So please don’t hesitate to sign-up and be proud to wear you free Sunset Walk t-shirt and medal.” The walk starts at 8pm on 24 May and costs £15 to register.

The fee includes a t-shirt, headgear, medal, refreshments and a hot roll and drink, with water generously provided by Spar in South Street and food kindly donated by McKechnie Jess and Aulds.

The minimum sponsorship is £30. Anyone who wants to take part should visit www.ardgowanhospice.org.uk
