GAMERS can now include Inverclyde in worldwide phenomenon Minecraft after a Dutchman living in Greenock created a quirky new update.

Larkfield resident Mark Bergers is a massive fan of the award-winning game and was shocked to discover there was no Scottish resource pack for it.

The 45-year-old, who has lived here since moving from Den Bosch six years ago, decided to create his own Scottish-themed update, complete with Highland cattle, tartan, rain — and pictures of his adopted hometown.

Two paintings are included depicting Greenock in the 1800s, with one featuring the iconic Victoria Tower.

Mark, who works at IBM and enjoys computer programming in his spare time, hopes the pack will catch on and is keen to hear feedback from fellow gamers locally.

He told the Tele: “In due time more things will be added to create a full Scottish resource pack for Minecraft, but I am looking to spread the news about this pack, as well as get input from Scottish people and Scottish Minecraft players so I can add more to it.

“One of the things added to the pack are two paintings of Greenock and two paintings of Glasgow.

“I thought ‘let’s make one’ and that’s how it started — just for the fun of it.” Minecraft is a block-building game where users can create their own virtual world.

Last year computer giants and Xbox creators Microsoft bought the game for £1.5 billion and Mark says there is a huge potential audience to tap into.

He said: “The game itself was released about four years ago and it’s become massive.

“The first time I saw it I thought ‘this is a boring game’ but I downloaded it just for the fun of it and found I really liked it.

“It’s a massive community — you’re talking millions of players and that’s just in the UK alone. It’s really huge.” Mark is now looking forward to tinkering with the pack he has created for the gaming phenomenon.

He said: “A designer is never pleased with anything. We are most critical of our own work. I’m pleased with it but there’s still a lot of work to do to it. Slowly but surely more and more bits will be added to it.” For more information and to download the Scottish resource pack for free visit dunecraft.co.uk
