Brave Dylan Nelson was diagnosed with the deadly disease at the turn of the year and has been deemed as ‘high risk’.

He is undergoing intensive chemotherapy and Carol McEwan, a friend of Dylan’s parents, was so touched by his plight she decided to arrange a charity night in aid of Yorkhill Hospital, where he is being treated.

The 31-year-old said: “I cannot begin to imagine what Dylan’s family are going through. He’s been classed as high risk — the first round of chemotherapy had no effect.

“He is now undergoing intensive chemo, which involves one day at week at Yorkhill and the rest at home.

“He’s been told that he’ll be fighting it for at least three years.” Dylan lives with his dad Andrew, mum Dionne Cassidy and baby brother Aidan and they have been overwhelmed by support from their friends in Inverclyde.

Carol, who lives in Branchton, added: “His mum and dad are getting strength from him.” Carol’s charity event started out as a small fundraiser but has grown quickly.

She said: “I cannot believe the amount of donations from people and local businesses through Facebook and two people came to my door with donations.

“The charity night has boosted Dylan’s spirits.” Carol’s children, Joanne, eight, and six-year-old Anthony have been doing their bit by squirreling away pocket money.

Their proud mum said: “They keep asking how Dylan is and they’ve been keeping a wee box in their room for change.” Carol has collected almost 50 raffle prize donations including a huge hand-crafted Minion lamp, return flight tickets to a European destination, and vouchers from local businesses include Morgans restaurant in Greenock, Gleddoch House Hotel in Langbank and Robert Alexander Butchers.

Dylan will also arrive at the event in style in a limousine, another donated gift.

The bash is being held in the Larkfield Masonic Association Club, which is providing the hall free of charge, on 16 May.

Tickets cost £5 and can be bought by calling Carol on 07463 294475.
