PUPILS at a Greenock primary are blowing their own trumpets — after returning to school with a haul of silverware from a recent music competition.

Students from Whinhill Primary claimed a catalogue of prizes at Inverclyde Music Festival, leaving head teacher Liz Ruddy needing a new display cabinet to show off the array of awards.

The youngsters proudly showed off their accolades, including the nursery children who won the new Gary Greene Memorial Trophy in the singing games group.

P1 also triumphed in the same category for their age group, with a rousing rendition of ‘The Grand Old Duke of York’ earning them the Inverclyde Music Festival Centenary Quaich.

There were also wins for Gaelic pupils with the P4-7 choir winning the Ravenscraig Primary trophy in the Gaelic choir category and individual honours for P7 Holly Hendry, who won the Highlanders’ Academy Excellence in Gaelic Shield and the Agnes T Greenlees Quaich.

Sisters Ceitidh and Màiri Cameron also did well in the individual events.

Ceitidh won the P5 and under solo speaking and Màiri was named second in class in the 11 years and under section.

Performers in primaries six and seven also bagged the Overton Cup for excellence in drama and music and the St Mary’s Trophy for a World War Two-inspired piece.

Whinhill head teacher Mrs Ruddy sang the praises of her pupils.

She said: “We’ve got a nice, brand new cabinet.

“The festival is such a local community tradition and it’s really important for the children to participate in it.

“Creativity is a big part of what we do here at Whinhill.

“It’s something we very much encourage because of the benefit for them in terms of their self-esteem, performance and performing skills. That amount of performing on such a big stage is so exciting for the little ones.

“It just creates fantastic memories.” See today's Tele for full pictures.
