YOUNG at heart pensioners met Inverclyde MP Iain McKenzie at Craigend Resource Centre.

He visited the centre’s elderly group to discuss challenges facing retired people, including fuel poverty and uncertainty over government pension plans.

The MP praised the centre for creating a sense of community and improving the health and wellbeing of people in Inverclyde.

He said: “It’s fantastic that we have groups such as these allowing pensioners to be active in the community. Indeed, my recent visit to EE’s Techy Tea Party shows that life does not stop at retirement – there are a wealth of activities that older people can involve themselves in here in Inverclyde.

“I commend Craigend for running so many different classes. The various groups on offer, such as lessons on computing, Spanish and dancing, demonstrate that we never have to stop learning new skills.” The MP added: “With many pensioners on a fixed income, the increasing cost of living can be a real burden. It is a travesty that people have to choose between food or fuel.

“That’s why Labour are committed to an energy price freeze until 2017. That will help lift pensioners out of fuel poverty here in Inverclyde.”
