BUDDING bookworms brought a cast of famous faces to life as they celebrated an international literary event.

Harry Potter, ‘Frozen’ princesses and William Wallace were just some of the star characters walking around classrooms as school pupils celebrated World Book Day.

The Tele visited Inverkip and Gourock primaries to get chapter and verse on today’s popular page turners.

All classes got in on the act, from nursery children to the primary seven classes.

Mhairi Crossan, acting depute head teacher at Inverkip, said: “It’s a wonderful opportunity for the children to participate in a variety of fun activities to celebrate and enhance their love of books and reading.

“Not only will pupils receive a £1 book voucher from National Book Tokens Ltd but due to the generosity and eagerness of parents to encourage their children to read, the commission from our recent scholastic Book Fair has allowed us to top up our class libraries.” Other popular figures on show at the school included Hermione from Harry Potter, the Artful Dodger from Oliver Twist, Sophie from the Big Friendly Giant and Alice in Wonderland.

Mhairi said: “Pupils have also been listening to authors’ talks and have been learning about different writers and titles to enhance their love of reading.” The day also captured the imagination of the staff — P5 teacher Paul Giffney became Braveheart by donning a kilt and painting his face blue.

Keen reader Avril McLoughlin, nine, who was dressed as Hermione, said: “I love reading and how you get to imagine a story in your head.

“My favourite book is Gangsta Granny, about someone you don’t expect to be a gangster.” Meanwhile at Gourock Primary the children piled into the library to pick up a copy of their favourite story.

Depute head Edith Hamill said: “The pupils love World Book Day.” Full pictures in today's Greenock Telegraph.
