WHIZZ kids at a Greenock school have developed a phone and computer application to bring local history alive as part of a £20,000 project.
The youngsters at St Mary’s Primary have spent the past six months working with experts from the Watt Library to develop ‘All Aboard: Researching Our Resources Together’ - an archive app which explores emigration.
Their high-tech educational resource was officially unveiled at a ceremony in the library.
Councillor Martin Brennan was impressed by the project, which was funded by a £20,000 donation from the Scottish Library and Information Council.
He said: “It’s fantastic to see this finished new resource which has been developed by pupils, the Watt Library and local history groups.
“This creative app will allow everyone – residents and overseas visitors - to explore the wealth of information and cultural heritage that exists here in Inverclyde in a new and exciting form.” Throughout the project, the children digitised microfilms, local history books and also attended a series of workshops to develop their app.
Their finished product will be available online for schools to download as an educational resource.
