THREE women will go the extra mile in memory of their sister when they hold a charity walk in her memory.

Allison Smith, Celia Ashford and Jacqueline Watt, were devastated when their sister Christine Thomson passed away six years ago aged just 51 after developing breast cancer.

As a special tribute to Christine, above right, who is remembered as a devoted and vivacious mum-of-two, her sisters have organised a seven-mile walk from Battery Park in Greenock to The Chartroom at Kip Marina in aid of Breast Cancer Care.

They are inviting people across Inverclyde to join them for the event on Sunday and help raise money for the charity, which provides specialist support and tailored information for anyone affected by breast cancer.

Allison, 42, who lives in Teal Drive, Inverkip, told the Tele: “I don’t think that any one of us thought we would have to go through this. Breast cancer is not something that was in our family.

“At the time, Christine found a lump in her breast and she then underwent a mastectomy.

“After this she was doing well, but a couple of years later the cancer came back very suddenly and spread.” Celia added: “It was absolutely horrendous — a huge shock.” Christine sadly passed away in hospital on 6 January 2009.

Since then, her family, including her husband George, daughter Lynne, 31, and her son Chris, 29, of Nicol Drive in Greenock, have raised thousands of pounds in her memory.

This weekend’s walk comes on the back of a hugely successful ‘pink tie’ ball, which was organised by Chris and his friends last year.

It raised an incredible £10,000 for Breast Cancer Care and will be held again on 10 October in Greenock Town Hall.

Jacqueline, who came up with the idea for the walk, said: “Chris and his friends did so well with the ball that I thought it would be a great idea to do a walk to raise more funds.

“The only thing I’m good at is walking!” Entry for the event is £20, with all money raised going to the charity.

Allison added: “It’s going to be a great day and my wee boy Jack and our friend Lorna will be giving out water to the walkers.

“John Harkins, who has an ice-cream van, is also going to give walkers a specially-made pink ice-cream at the finish.” The walkers will also receive a badge, ribbon and certificate at the end.

Anyone who would like to take part in the walk which sets off at 1.30pm, can turn up on the day or enter via the Facebook page, The Breast Cancer Ball.
