HUNDREDS of Inverclyde children will celebrate the Commonwealth Games with a special sports meeting tomorrow.

Ravenscraig Stadium will be buzzing with excited primary school youngsters competing in an all-day heptathlon.

It is being organised by Inverclyde Local Athletic Partnership (ILAP) as a follow-up to the successful ‘quad challenge’ series they ran last year for schools to coincide with the Games in Glasgow.

ILAP chairperson Gerry Gaffney explained: “We received £10,000 last year from the Games Celebrate Legacy organisers, and used some of it for the quad challenge.

“We suggested to them that we could use the remainder of the money for a special heptathlon. They were very supportive that we are continuing the legacy of the Commonwealth Games.” The heptathlon will feature 300 children competing from 9.30am to 3pm in the 60 metres, 60m hurdles, 600m, shot putt, long jump, javelin and triple jump.

The day will also incorporate workshops delivered by coaches.

Gerry said: “We intend to make this an annual event. The legacy of the Games will continue to be celebrated in sport within Inverclyde primary schools.

“We are extremely fortunate to have a well-established primary school sportshall athletics programme which sees on average 400 pupils taking part in an indoor league over the winter months.

“The programme creates an opportunity for all local schools to participate in an indoor competition in a four month league structure.

“Its success is reflected in the results achieved by local schools, who have finished in the top three at the West of Scotland sportshall final in the last four out of five years.”
