Inverclyde’s SNP leader Chris McEleny is predicting a big boost to the local economy thanks to the tens of thousands of fans who will come into the area to watch matches next season.

At least one of Rangers or Hibs will be in the same league as Morton, while Renfrewshire derbies will also return to the fixture list for the first time in 15 years with St Mirren being relegated from the top flight.

Councillor McEleny, a former Morton youth player, said: “Depending on who is in the league, Greenock could see 25,000 extra people coming to the area.

“That could bring in a potential windfall of £1 million for businesses, if supporters can be encouraged to enjoy what’s on offer locally before a match.” The councillor was with the club when they clinched the Third Division in similar dramatic circumstances back in 2003 and savoured Saturday’s success as one of over 6,000 fans who packed into Cappielow.

He added: “Saturday was a great day and a great night for Inverclyde. I’m delighted we managed to win the league in the end. Morton fans can now sit back and enjoy the play-offs to learn who we will face next year.

“We already know that we will be entertaining St Mirren, but we could also be facing some of the biggest clubs in Scottish football.” His SNP colleague, MSP Stuart McMillan, has tabled a motion in the Scottish Parliament to congratulate Morton.

Mr McMillan said: “What a fantastic end to the season — the atmosphere was electric.

“Following the disappointment of last season, it was a great day for all of us Morton fans to see the club win promotion and the league title at the first time of asking.

“I want to congratulate Jim Duffy, the players and all involved at the club for what is a fantastic achievement.

“I know everyone connected with Morton from the bottom up have worked hard all season for this day. Now we can all look forward to next season when we will meet St Mirren again on league duty. That should be an easy 12 points for the Ton!”
