A GREENOCK man who stabbed his pensioner father to death has been given a life sentence after being found guilty of murder.

A jury at the High Court in Stirling took less than two and a half hours to find Peter McDermott guilty of murdering his dad Bernard, who was 65.

The 42-year-old knifed his father three times in the head, three times in the arm, seven times in the neck, and 13 times on the body, Judge Lord Uist fixed the punishment part of the killer's sentence - which he must serve before being eligible for parole - at 20 years.

McDermott had admitted delivering the fatal blows, but his defence claimed he was suffering from a 'dissociative episode' while re-living childhood trauma, and did not realise what he was doing.

The murder took place in Mr McDermott senior's Lynedoch Street flat shortly before 1.15pm on 23 April last year.

As he passed sentence, Judge Lord Uist told McDermott: "This was indeed a brutal and callous murder."
