Gregory McAulay, 31, appeared in the dock at the High Court in Glasgow to face a charge of using a fully-loaded pistol to try and carry out a double killing in Poplar Street.

McAulay is alleged to have, while acting with another person, assaulted the man and woman as they were within a black Vauxhall Insignia by discharging a firearm at them.

He is said to have fired the gun where a bullet struck the rear window of the car and damaged it. All of this is said to have been done in an attempt to murder both people on 1 February this year.

A second charge libelled against McAulay claims that he attempted to defeat the ends of justice by washing specific items of clothing worn.

He is also alleged to have had in his possession a self-loading pistol and ammunition for the weapon. McAulay appeared in the dock in Glasgow after an earlier appearance at Greenock Sheriff Court in February.

He was arrested by detectives after a 10-day investigation. The accused, who was represented by defence QC Thomas Ross, denies all charges against him. Matters were continued for trial at the High Court in Edinburgh, scheduled to begin on 23 October.

McAulay, of East Street, Greenock, was remanded in custody to appear again then.
