NEW floodlighting is to be installed at Greenock’s Ravenscraig Stadium.

Both the athletics track and the football park will be covered by the lights as part of the overall refurbishment of the facility.

The current lights are dated and it is difficult to replace lamps because a ‘cherry picker’ is needed to reach them.

A report to the council’s environment and regeneration committee also pointed out that, because of the age of the lighting columns, they are ‘susceptible to misalignment’ following periods of high winds.

The report added: “A feasibility study is being undertaken on the options for replacement of the floodlighting which will meet current standards, address the requirement for efficient and cost-effective maintenance and improve lighting levels and user control.” The cost of the project is not known yet, but it will be taken from £93,000 remaining in a leisure and pitches fund.

As the Tele revealed recently, the council is also to spend £100,000 on replacing the slipway at Coronation Park in Port Glasgow.

Environment committee convener, Councillor Michael McCormick, said the council is delivering a great deal of physical improvements across the area.

He said: “The improvements to the running track at Ravenscraig have delivered a top-drawer facility for athletics.

“Replacing the floodlighting is now next on the ‘to-do’ list to continue to make sure this is a facility we can all be proud of.” The councillor said improvements already delivered to Coronation Park at the waterfront are there to be seen, and added: “Additional work is now required at the slipway, and our property team have identified a way of making that happen.” Other capital projects agreed by the committee include the refurbishment of the district court office space at an estimated cost of £2.3 million.
