DETECTIVES are investigating two separate attacks on three men during a night of violence in Greenock.

A 23-year-old was taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital with head and facial injuries following a fight involving up to a dozen men, which started off in Cathcart Street and spilled on to Terrace Road at around 1.30am yesterday.

A second incident happened around 4am on nearby Lynedoch Street at its junction with Wellpark Buildings when two men aged 18 and 19 were attacked with a bottle.

They were also taken to IRH for treatment to head and facial injuries after being attacked by another man.

Police are treating both attacks as serious assaults but do not believe they are linked.

DC Neil Martin, of Greenock CID, said: "The first incident initially started on Cathcart Street as a disturbance and spilled onto Terrace Road.

"Between 10 and 12 males were involved in a large fight or disturbance.

"As a result a 23-year-old male suffered head and facial injuries after being punched.

"We don't believe any weapons were used at the moment."

Detectives are following a positive line of inquiry in relation to the Lynedoch Street bottle attack.

DC Martin said: "There was a disturbance involving a number of males, however two men aged 18 and 19 were attacked by another man with what we believe was a bottle.

"They suffered head and facial injuries and were taken to IRH but were released after treatment.

"In relation to this, we have a positive line of inquiry.

"At this time it doesn't appear that the two incidents are linked despite the close proximity.

"They seem to be separate.

"We are appealing for any witnesses to contact Greenock CID or Crimestoppers if they wish to remain anonymous."

Anyone with information about either of the attacks can call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
