Flabbergasted Debbie Macaldowie sparked the ‘outrageous’ demand from the Tokyo Joe bar after posting a negative online review.

She was accused of ‘changing the recipe’ with her onion request, and by asking for some salad — which she says never materialised on her plate.

The Facebook spat came after Debbie complained that the tuna mayonnaise baguette she ordered, inset, was half the size she expected from reading the menu.

She told the Telegraph: “You just don’t treat customers like this.

“I will never go back to the place — the attitude of the management is just disgraceful.” Debbie was hit with a doubling of her lunch bill after pointing out that her meal was prepared in a way not stipulated on the Tokyo Joe menu.

She said: “The half baguette was toasted, which I don’t like, and the tuna was hot, which I also don’t like and would never have ordered if I had known.” Her ‘recipe-changing’ wish for onion and salad prompted brazen bosses at the Westburn Street bar and restaurant to hike the price of her food from £4.90 to £9.90 — after she submitted her two-star review.

Posts from Tokyo Joe’s official Facebook account to Debbie state: “You changed the recipe, the outcome is your responsibility. Simples. We bent backwards to accommodate you, your sandwich and your chips.

“The price is actually £9.90 if you change the recipe, like you did. So you owe us £5 please, as soon as you can manage in?” Debbie — who posted a picture of her lunch and only ate the chips — explained that the menu lists a baguette, not a toasted half-baguette.

She hit back at Tokyo Joe: “It’s not anything to do with my changing a recipe, onion and salad is hardly rocket science.

“You most certainly did not bend over backwards as I paid £4.90 for a tiny portion of fries.” Referring to the picture of her food, she posted: “Does this look appetising? And if you like I can show this to Trading Standards!” Debbie also told the restaurant: “£9.90 for that, where does it state that on the menu? Think that might be another matter for trading standards.” She also offered to personally deliver a replacement onion in return for an apology and a refund for her uneaten half-baguette.

In her original review she praised Tokyo Joe’s waiting staff as ‘fab’, adding: “Pity the food wasn’t.” Debbie told the Telegraph: “I had my own business for 18 years and you have just got to be nice to your customers if you want them to return and pay your wages.

“I didn’t even get the salad, so they’re wanting to charge me an extra £5 for some onion!” Debbie won the support of other Facebook users for her stance, with one woman declaring: “Shocking speaking to a customer this way!!” In response, Tokyo Joe twice posted ‘BIG YAWN!!!!’ on the lengthy thread of comments.

Debbie said: “I have a degree in hospitality but it doesn’t take that to see how outrageous they’re being.

“I wasn’t cheeky — I was just stating my case.

“Even people I don’t know have commented on how ridiculous they have been.

“One woman private messaged me to say she had posted a negative comment about them before and it was removed.

“The thing is, I submitted my comments to their review section, and they can’t delete a review.” The Telegraph made repeated attempts to speak with Tokyo Joe management but no-one returned our final call yesterday.
