DETECTIVES are today probing two serious assaults which took place in Greenock early this morning.

A 27-year-old man was attacked in the town's Weir Street, near Sinclair Street.

Another man, aged 23, sustained leg injuries after being set upon in Lynedoch Street, near Regent Street.

Police - who were alerted to the incidents at around 5am and 6am respectively - set up cordons at both crime scenes.

Greenock CID - who currently have no descriptions of the attackers - have launched an appeal for witnesses to come forward.

The Telegraph understands that there was a trail of blood droplets at Lynedoch Street and that a house party may have been taking place around the time of the Weir Street assault.

A Greenock CID spokesman said: "Enquiries are at a very early stage.

"The injuries sustained by both men were not life-threatening and both have now been discharged from hospital.

"However, we are treating both of these incidents as serious assaults."

It is not yet clear how the victims came about their injuries.

If you can help police, call the 101 number.
