A SUPER summer playscheme is celebrating 20 years of entertaining youngsters.

Hundreds of kids are throwing themselves into three weeks of fun at an annual camp run by Craigend Resource Centre.

It offers activities like sports, crafts and drama at King’s Oak Primary.

Brian Power, centre co-ordinator, said: “We do a wee bit of everything.

“It’s about keeping the children active, plus we have day trips out twice a week.

“We take the kids out to the cinema, swimming and the transport museum, Heads of Ayr and on the last day M&D Amusements.

“We run morning and afternoon sessions and have around 77 children booked for each one.

“We’ve also got a waiting list.

“It’s probably because of the price — it costs 50p a session.” Brian says Craigend aims to keep costs down so everyone can take part.

He said: “Most parents book for the three weeks.

“It’s aimed to get kids off the street, make them safe and not cost parents too much money.

“All the money coming in goes on the kids.” The scheme is supported with a grant from Inverclyde Council and through fundraising.

It is run with a mix of sessional staff and volunteers and is open to eight to 12-year-olds and proves popular with children and parents alike.

Brian said: “There is always a big rush to get everyone in who wants a place.

“We get people coming into the centre before Christmas asking about next year’s playscheme.

“There’s a bit more pressure on working parents during the holidays. This gives them a break.”
