A TEENAGE DJ from Greenock is in a spin after playing to more than 6,000 people at a major event near London.

Aaron Bissett took to the stage at a festival in Essex in what was the biggest gig of his life.

At just 17 there are not many people his age who have performed to so many people, but the former Highlanders’ Academy and Glasgow Gaelic School pupil took it all in his stride.

He initially wanted to ‘shadow’ the DJ but ended up bagging himself a slot playing to thousands of people.

Aaron told the Tele: “It was a big Scout camp with 24 hours of non-stop activities.

“A part of that was a rave and there were over 6,000 Scouts there — before that I’d only ever played to a maximum of 450.

“It was quite scary at first because of all the people but when I got up and got on with it it was great.

“I just got in contact with the organisers — I’m a Queen’s Scout as well — and at first I wanted to shadow the DJ and they said yes.

“I started doing soundchecks and the DJ told me to muck about with the decks then he said I was really good.

“I ended up playing until 3am — it was quite an experience for me.” Aaron has been DJing for five years after getting a set of decks. As well as the event in Essex, he has also played in Spain, back home in Greenock and featured on the Tele’s sister station YOUR Radio.

He is preparing to begin an accountancy course at the City of Glasgow College after the summer but hopes he can mix that with a successful career as a DJ — and emulate Dutch sensation Martin Garrix, who he is a big fan of.

Aaron said: “I’ve been DJing since I was about 12.

“It started off when I was in primary school and I thought the DJ at discos and events wasn’t very good and I could do a better job.

“I got my first set of decks when I was 12 and DJ’d at our school discos.

“I always dreamed of being that guy on stage playing the tunes and getting people dancing.

“I’m into all sorts of music to be honest but just now I like Martin Garrix. I would love to do even a fraction of what he does — that would be great.I did the gig near London and I’ve been invited back down to play again.

“I’ve also played in Salou after I got speaking to one of the DJs and managed to get myself a slot in one of the clubs and I’m going back there this year.

“I did the Commonwealth Games event in Greenock, a few parties with Speak Up Inverclyde and also worked with Your Radio. I’m hoping to get more gigs.”
