A NEW freight service from Greenock to Holland will give a big boost to the Ocean Terminal, its owners said today.

Peel Ports said the new BG Freight service is expected to increase the number of containers handled by the facility.

Greenock currently deals with 50,000 containers a year BG Freight will handle 4,000 in the first year, with a plan to double the number within two years.

Peel said the service would open up new routes for businesses on the west coast of Scotland.

Global drinks company Diageo is one of the first producers to take advantage of the service, which goes to Rotterdam via Liverpool and Belfast.

A Peel spokesperson said: “The route could prove a boon to the west of Scotland’s food and drink, chemical and advanced manufacturing industries, by cutting the cost of exports.”
