TRIBUTE has been paid to local football legend Reggie Scorer who has died at the age of 72.

Reggie was synonymous with the youth football scene in Inverclyde for decades and a very popular and well-respected figure right across the area.

He devoted his life to running local teams and schools' sides and had been in charge of countless clubs, giving up his time for generations of players over many decades.

Reggie, who lived in Gourock, worked for many years as a school attendance officer.

He received a Scottish Youth Football Merit Award for the Western Region in 2006.

He was honoured again four years later by the Scottish Schools Football Association with a well deserved volunteer of the year award which was presented to him, pictured, at Hampden.

In an interview with the Tele some years ago modest Reggie explained his love of football and motivation to stay involved in the game. He said: "I keep going because I have a life interest in football and I still enjoy it. The boys haven't changed much over the years although with computers it is harder to keep them interested in football. There is so much for them to do now. I like to give them a discipline, dedication and love of football."

Inverclyde Council sports champion Ronnie Ahlfeld, who has been heavily involved with the local youth football scene for many years himself, today paid a warm tribute to Reggie.

Mr Ahlfeld said: "There is no doubt Reggie was a legendary figure locally. I had known Reggie for the best part of 60 years. To a large extent organising football teams was his life. He started with Gourock United and over the years organised young teams for a number of different clubs.

"He also helped in organising a number of school football teams. Everybody involved in youth football in Inverclyde knew Reggie. He was a very nice and humble man. Some years back I organised a reception for Reggie in the town buildings in recognition of his achievements and contributions. Reggie wanted it to be in private and with his family we enjoyed a lunch in the Provost's Room where Reggie was presented with a gift by the Provost.

"My sincere condolences to his family. I hope to organise a trophy which will be competed for in years to come in Reggie's memory. He was a real gentleman and will be missed by all who knew him."
