STRUGGLING families in Inverclyde are getting help with school uniforms thanks to a new anti-poverty project.

Inverclyde Back to School Bank was only set up four weeks ago — and so far they have responded to around 30 calls from people in need.

They have also been inundated with hundreds of donations from kind-hearted local people eager to reach out to those in need.

The Inverclyde set-up is part of a national campaign to help parents who have to fork out hundreds of pounds every year to kit their children out for school.

Mary Sellars, who is helping establish the uniform bank along with two other locals, said: “We have had an overwhelming response so far with donations.

“It has been incredibly busy.

“We want to help as many families as possible.

“There’s incredible need out there.” The organisers are working on a referral basis but say they are keen to reach out to families who do not get any additional support.

Mary teamed up with Jakki Purdon and Sharon Lightfoot to launch the bank and they want to make it a long-term initiative which will help families throughout the year.

Anyone wishing to donate can drop items off at Flava in Gourock or Robert Alexander Butchers in Port Glasgow.

To make a donation or find out more about seeking help contact the bank through the Inverclyde Back to School Facebook page.

People can also make cash donations too, by visiting Inverclyde Back to School Bank page on the Indiegogo webpage.
