NEW students at Inverclyde Academy ‘toasted’ the end of their first week at a special breakfast.

Croissants, pastries and fresh fruit were some of the tasty treats served up for the first year pupils at the ice breaker event on Friday.

Before they got tucked in, head teacher Denise Crawford welcomed the new pupils and praised them for the ‘splendid’ way in which they had integrated into the school community during their first week.

The pupils then had the chance to make new friends when they were split up into different groups and encouraged to find out more about each other’s likes and dislikes.

Deputy head teacher Paul Brown said it was a great way for the pupils to settle into high school life and meet new friends.

He told the Tele: “The breakfast is part of our enhanced transition programme from primary to secondary which starts when pupils are in primary five and runs until the pupils are well settled into secondary school. The breakfast was also a great example of many people within the Inverclyde Academy community — including teaching staff, non-teaching staff, pupils and canteen staff — working together to ensure the new S1 pupils settle in well to the school.” The school was keen to thank everyone who supported the event including the 25 sixth year pupils who set up the canteen and the fourth year pupils who will act as buddies for the first year pupils.

Mr Brown also praised Donna McCahill and Candice Leckie from the pupil support department, who helped organise the event.

Next month, the first year pupils will also take part in a variety of activities at a team building day which involves Active Schools, Police Scotland and Inverclyde Council’s community learning development team.
