GREENOCK traffic lights have been improved after a partially sighted pensioner had problems crossing the road.

George McInnes said he had experienced near-misses with traffic at the Brougham Street/Campbell Street junction because he couldn’t see the ‘green man’ properly.

He contacted MSP Stuart McMillan, who got in touch with SNP councillor, Math Campbell-Sturgess.

The councillor said: “The council decided to install a safer, more modern traffic light system. I’m pleased the they acted so quickly to make the crossing safer for pedestrians.” Mr McMillan, convener of the Scottish Parliament cross-party group on visual impairment, said: “The new traffic light system, which clearly displays the green and red man and has clear audio capabilities, will be much safer for pedestrians, especially those with visual impairment. Making our roads and walkways safer can only benefit the local area.”
