A PORT teenager told how she has been left devastated after her beloved pet dog was killed in a cruel hit and run incident.

Aimee Rodgers, 14, broke down in tears when she discovered her dog Rosco fighting for his life after being knocked down in the middle of Kilmacolm Road.

Local vets desperately tried to save the lovable Yorkshire Terrier, but his injuries were too severe and he passed away.

Heartbroken Aimee and her mum Lisa, of Staffa Avenue, are angry that the driver failed to stop to help Rosco and have spoken out in an attempt to stop this happening to anyone else.

Aimee said: “I’m really upset and I miss Rosco so much. He was my best pal.

“I’m going to use some of his fur to make a teddy bear so I can always remember him.” Lisa, 37, says her daughter, a pupil at Notre Dame High School, was so upset that she had to take a few days off school.

She said: “We’re absolutely devastated.

“Aimee got Rosco last year to keep her company as her brother Ross was out in America – that’s why she called him Rosco.

“I can’t blame the driver for hitting Rosco, but the thing that hurt the most is the fact that they just drove off and left him there in the middle of the road.

“It’s just horrible.” Lisa says the incident took place on 31 September after Rosco escaped from their garden.

She added: “Rosco managed to get out and someone phoned me to say that he’d been hit.

“When I got there he was still alive and was in shock.

“There was a lady in the road beside him trying to comfort him.

“Witnesses said the driver stopped and looked round and then drove off, that’s what makes it worse.

“We took Rosco to the vet but they couldn’t do anything for him as he had bleeding in his chest.” Lisa was keen to thank Dawn Adamson, the woman who rushed to help Rosco.

She said: “Dawn was amazing as she lay beside Rosco on the road. She got my number from his collar and rung me and she also contacted the police and the vets.

“Everyone who was there when it happened were great.

“If it wasn’t for them, Rosco would’ve just been left there on his own.” Police are appealing for information about the incident which happened on Kilmacolm Road at its junction with Arran Avenue.

Sergeant Laura Stewart of Greenock Police is looking to trace the driver of a blue vehicle, possibly a Ford Fiesta, in connection with the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to phone 101.
