Part of A78 remains closed
DRIVERS using the A78 have been advised that part of its northbound carriageway will be closed until emergency repairs are completed.
Yesterday's storms and floods caused extensive damage to the coastal defence wall and it has to be rebuilt.
The northbound side of the key route between Holmwood Court and Danefield Lodge, in Largs, has been closed to allow essential reconstruction works to be carried out.
The emergency repairs to the road are being carried out by Amey on behalf of Transport Scotland.
Amey says it will try to minimise disruption to the travelling public as much as possible.
A traffic management system has been implemented between Holmwood Court and Danefield Lodge and will be operated manually during the peak times of between 6.30am and 9.30pm to help minimise delays.
Colin MacKenzie, Amey's operating company representative, said: "Following the severe weather experienced across the country on 3 January the coastal defence on the A78 was severely damaged between Largs and Skelmorlie.
"We've considered every other option but regrettably there is no alternative than to close the northbound carriageway in order to complete these urgent repairs and minimise the impact on the local community.
"Road users intending to use this route should allow extra time for their journey to reach their destination on time."

Report commentThis road really does belong to a bygone age, how Ardrossan / Saltcoats got a by-pass before this cart-track is a mystery.
