A FED-UP businessman has warned Inverclyde Council that they need to take urgent action on a ‘dangerous’ road littered with potholes.

Greenock man Jim Wilson hit out at the state of Rook Road last year in the Tele, warning that it was putting drivers and pedestrians at risk.

He has been unimpressed with attempts by the roads department to patch up the craters and is now adamant that Rook Road needs to be completely resurfaced from scratch.

Jim, who runs a recycling firm, wants the council to use some of a £150,000 fund earmarked for potholes. Angry Jim, who lives in the street, said: “I came out of my house one morning and the pothole was so big I thought there had been a gas explosion.

“I complained about it last year – they came out and patched them up but they were back again straight away.

“The road needs resurfaced, that is obvious to everyone.Patching up the road is just not good enough. It really is bad and something needs to be done.” Inverclyde Council has just produced a report detailing an improved performance on pothole repairs. The number of potholes awaiting action dropped from 364 at the end of April 2014 to 119 by the end of December.

According to a report to go before councillors, the most serious potholes were all fixed within 24 hours while 92 per cent of the less serious defects were dealt with within a target time of 28 days. The Tele revealed last February how the council had shelled out £40,000 in compensation for pothole damage over a five-year spell.

Today a Municipal Buildings spokesperson said: “The council inspects all its public roads on a cyclical basis and makes repairs to any safety related defects that are found.

“We will arrange for a further inspection of Rook Road to be carried out in the near future.”
