SUPERBOWL WINNER: Greenock’s Lawrence Tynes.

GREENOCK-born American football star Lawrence Tynes showed off the Inverclyde tartan to the world, when he led New York"s Tartan Day Parade at the weekend in a kilt gifted to him by the Provost.

New York Giants star Tynes swapped his football gear for the kilt when he kicked off the parade as Grand Marshal.

More than 2,000 bagpipers, clans and Scottish descendants marched through the heart of New York to mark the start of Tartan Week, a celebration of the existing and historical links between Scotland and North America.

Previous Grand Marshals have included Sean Connery and George Reid, former Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament.

Tynes made history this year when he became the first Scot to win the sport"s glitzy showpiece, the Super Bowl.

Provost Michael McCormick gifted the kicker with the kilt in the hope he would wear it at the parade to celebrate his Inverclyde roots.

The Provost said: 'It is fantastic news Lawrence has agreed to wear the Inverclyde tartan when he leads the Tartan Day Parade as Grand Marshal.

'Lawrence is an exceptional ambassador for Inverclyde and is a role model for young people.'
