A MAN tried to headbutt a police officer after he called him a "lunatic" for struggling while being arrested.

John Cannon, 23, was picked up for being abusive to officers while drunk in Burns Road, Greenock, on 10 April.

He shouted to officers: 'I know your face, I know where you live, I will do you next time I see you.'

Cannon snapped as he was bundled into a police van and was told "Stop struggling, you lunatic", the sheriff court heard.

He then began to struggle even more and tried to headbutt one of the officers.

Yesterday, he admitted two charges, of breach of the peace and police assault.

His solicitor, Ellen MacDonald, revealed to the court Cannon had a history of mental health difficulties.

Sheriff John Herald jailed Cannon, of Kelburn Terrace, Port Glasgow, for three months for the offences.
