MEMBERS of the Old Men’s Club in Port Glasgow held a Tramps’ Ball to celebrate the end of their art class.

Members threw a party after completing of the painting sessions, which climaxed with a display at the town’s library.

The bash was also a way to try and attract new people to join the ever-popular group.

Joe Gallagher, who at 91 is the oldest member, said: “What I like about the club is you get to meet up regularly with friends.

“It’s the sociability aspect of having a game of pool or chess and the camaraderie. This seems to be lacking in today’s society, especially among men. Some of us were fellow shipyard workers, but you lose touch when you retire.”

President Edward Gilmartin decided to revive the Tramps’ Ball after experiencing such celebrations while seconded to Cyprus in 1957.

He said: “It was always an excellent venture. The boys took part in an art class and this is their reward.”

It is hoped that a second painting class will run for members this season.

The men meet at the club in Fore Street on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1pm.

Mr Gilmartin said: “The club is non-sectarian and everyone is welcome.”
