CHILDREN at a Port Glasgow primary turned the tables on the Tele and became journalists for the day.

Members of the St Michael’s communication group invited reporter and former pupil Paul John Coulter and photographer George Munro to the school to learn more about the media.

They were grilled about various aspects of their jobs as the inquisitive youngsters gleaned information to help with their role in spreading news about what is happening at the Bridgend Avenue primary.

The communication group is made up of around 30 kids from P1 through to P7.

They are involved in developing the St Michael’s website, updating its Twitter page and keeping parents and the wider community informed about all that is happening in the school.

Maria Moses, P2/1 teacher and leader of the communication group, said:

“We’ve never done this before but the pupils are so enthusiastic, especially the older ones who are desperate to come to the meetings every second Monday.”

As well as helping to improve their reading, writing and speaking skills, the initiative has also given the young people a stronger voice and in turn boosted their confidence.

They are now keen to learn more about a variety of subjects — and share information with others.

Mrs Moses said: “They are really confident and some of the children who asked questions would have never done that before.

“It has given them the opportunity to speak to people coming into the school more freely.

“That’s something that they wouldn’t have done before and it’s great.”
